5 Lessons from Incredibly Successful Radio Programmers
1. Choose the Scariest Choice
Even if the radio station might sound odd, with its business plan in question and the books bleeding money like crazy, you can manage to create incredible value in a short time period. If you’re in charge, what matters is to be sure you surround yourself with smart people who can visualize success and are not afraid to take risks in being creative.
2. Recognize Your Weaknesses
While you might think you’re great in budget planning,
you may spend months working with Excel sheets. You might be better served by hiring someone who can manage budgets in just days. Don’t be afraid to admit someone else can do some things much better than you.
3. Identify Your Station’s Issues and Start Solving Them
We all know that every radio station has unique issues that need immediate action planning. Don’t push problems aside and wait for a miracle to happen. Maybe there’s a need to fix servers, help with marketing or work on that PR issue you’ve avoided for a year now, but do something. Issues cannot be put aside. Roll up your sleeves and show your team that there is a solution to every challenge. This is how to create standards and expectations.
4. Take No Favorites (This one I’ve learned from a Fortune 500 CEO)
Throw yourself into the problem if you can see you’re able to provide a quick solution. Do not care if that means you’ll step on some toes. Management does not care about that. Do not participate in office gossip. Be absolutely sure you never use gossip as strategic information. Everything needs to be bulletproof! You might make some enemies with such behavior, but you’ll generate much more value for the company and make yourself irreplaceable.
When you achieve everything you can imagine in a position, make sure you don’t congratulate yourself by relaxing and resting on laurels. This is the time to close old doors behind you and work on a new project. Choose a company or project that understands the value of your experience and knowledge.
